2:30 am
ticking. and justice antonin scalia makes one last visit to the supreme court today where he'll lie in repose before being laid to rest tomorrow. it is 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west, it is "way too early." hey, there. good morning. it's friday, february 19th. i'm alex witt. we are just one day to the south carolina primaries and a record turnout at least for the republicans is expected. we're just minutes away now from the release of new poll numbers in south carolina. as donald trump maintains a strong lead in the final hours before voting. the latest american research group tracking poll gives trump a 12 point edge to marco rubio's 22. with john kasich still in third at 14%.
2:31 am
just barely ahead of ted cruz. looking at jeb bush, at 9% and ben carson at 4%. but the fox news poll tells a different story with trump at 32% and cruz in second place. kasich there at 6%. this while donald trump's latest war of words is with none other than the pope. on a flight to rome after a six-day visit to mexico pope francis was asked about trump's plan to build a giant wall along the u.s./mexican border. and the pontiff said, a person who only thinks about building walls wherever they may be and not building bridges is not christian. i would only say that this man is not christian if he has said things like that. but the billionaire had a swift and pretty blunt response to the spiritual leader of 1.2 billion catholics worldwide. >> i just wrote this out very quickly about the pope. he actually said that maybe i'm not a good christian or something. it's unbelievable, which is really not a nice thing to say.
2:32 am
if and when the vatican is attacked by isis, you know isis, their primary -- their primary goal is to get to the vatican. that would be their ultimate trophy. i can promise you that the pope would have only wished and prayed that donald trump would have been president. because this would not have happened. isis would have been eradicated unlike what is happening now with our all talk, no action politicians. the pope was in mexico. the leadership -- oh, donald trump is a bad guy. he wants to build a wall. the pope only heard one side of the story. and he didn't see the crime, the drug trafficking and the negative economic impact. for a religious leader to question a person's faith is disgraceful. they're using the pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves. that's the mexican government. i think it's great that mexico's doing this.
2:33 am
if you can get away with it, you have to get away with it. how smart are they? they see the pope and tell the pope bad things about me because i'm against -- i'm very, very strong for illegal immigration. very -- we have to stop it, right, so they tell the pope, trump is bad and he say something negatives about it, now it's all over the world, who the hell cares, i don't care, i don't care. we have to stop illegal immigration and stop the massive crime. >> hell with the pope there? not taking the same tone against the vatican, his republican rivals sided with him on the immigration. >> as a member of the church -- he's my spiritual leader. i respect the pope. his voice will be heard, but dealing with isis, we need someone who has a steady hand and a strategy. >> there's no nation on earth that's more compassionate on immigration than we are. we accept a million people a year in the united states legally every year. mexico doesn't do.
2:34 am
no other country in the world does that. but we're a sovereign country and we have a right to control who comes in, when they come in and how they come in. vatican city controls who comes in, when they come in and how they come in as a nation -- or city state and the united states has a right to do that as well. >> first of all, i'm pro pope, okay. put me down in the pro pope columns. he is the essence of humility. he has opened the walls of the church to lots of people who didn't understand it. here's what i will say. we have a right to build a wall but i have to tell you, there are too many walls between us. we need bridges between us if we're iffing of to fix the problems in -- if we'reing to fix the problems in washington because all they have is walls. >> donald trump has said he opposed the 2003 invasion of iraq, but this morning, those claims are under new scrutiny. buzzfeed has unearthed a 2002 interview from the howard stern show that said he did support an invasion. here is his reaction following the cnn republican town hall. >> we don't know the enemy. >> we know this they're skulking around somewhere and you're a
2:35 am
sitting duck. >> but we have an idea who the enemy is and the politicians don't want to tell you that. >> are you for invading iraq? >> i guess so. i wish the first time it was done correctly. >> do you remember saying that? >> no, but i mean, i could have said that. nobody asked me -- i wasn't a politician. he was probably the first time -- it was probably the first time somebody asked me that question. but that was before the war started -- >> 2002. >> by the time the war started i was against the war and there are articles -- i mean, there are headlines in 2003, 2004 that i was totally against the war. people in your world in terms of the pundits said there's definite proof in 2003 and '04 that i was against it. >> well, cruz largely stuck to his stump speech and marco rubio abruptly cancelled five minutes
2:36 am
before citing scheduling conflicts. cruz's campaign was quick to seize on this, this is a final admission that marco rubio isn't even going to try to compete for the votes of conservatives in south carolina or anywhere else. and who can blame him? he isn't a conservative. shown that response, rubio's campaign issued one of its own, asking did the cruz campaign really take a break from photoshopping pictures and recording false robocalls to send out this false press release? rubio's campaign is crying foul after a photoshopped image of him appeared with president obama on a website. it was posted on the real rubio record.com. a source within the rubio campaign released this stock photo which the campaign was photoshopped to show him shaking hands with the president. as you can imagine, the senator from florida was not pleased. >> it's not real. the picture's fake. it's a photoshop of someone else shaking hands and it appears it isn't even barack obama either.
2:37 am
this is a disturbing pattern, guys. they're making things up. in this case they made up a picture. >> a strategist for the rubio campaign added there's a culture of dishonesty that goes from top to bottom in the cruz campaign. telling lies is not only tolerated but seems to be encouraged. a spokes woman for the cruz campaign was asked about the image and said, quote, they're distracting from the fact we're putting out factual information about rubio's record. address the policy on the website and the facts in the story and stop being sidetracked by things that aren't important. well, the photoshopped image has been replaced with an actual photo of rubio shaking hands with the president. ohio governor john kasich has made compassion a calling card of his presidential campaign. and his empathy was on full display pat a town hall in clemson, south carolina, yesterday. as one young man chosen to ask the last question explained why his support for kasich was unwavering and just a warning, you might want to have a tissue ready. >> i don't want to get too
2:38 am
emotional but it's serious. it has a happy ending. like over a year ago, a man who is like my second dad he killed himself. and then a few months later my parents got a divorce and then a few months later my dad lost his job. but i was in a real he dark place for a long time, i was pretty depressed but i found hope. i found it in the lord and in my friends and now i found it in my presidential candidate that i support. and i'd really appreciate one of those hugs you have been talking about. [ applause ] >> look at that. it was nice, right? kasich is lagging behind in the polls there, he's ahead in the newspaper primary. the two biggest papers in the palmetto state, have now endorsed him. kasich has been backed by "the
2:39 am
boston globe," and "the dallas morning news" and "new york times." let's turn to the democrats and that shows hillary clinton maintaining a strong lead ahead of next weekend's primary. she's up by 22 points and out front by 29 in a poll from monmouth university. but senator sanders continues to perform well in national surveys against clinton and is actually overtaken her by three points in a new poll from fox news. clinton and sanders were both in las vegas for a town hall hosted by msnbc and telemundo. the event comes ahead of tomorrow's nevada caucuses and both candidates pledged quick action. clinton promised to introduce legislation in the first hundred days of her presidency and sanders would make immigration a top topic. when asked about bill clinton's recent comments comparing his rise to the tea party, he went
2:40 am
after him on welfare reform, to trade. here's what hillary clinton had to say last night about her husband and president obama in response. >> well, he was a president to create -- who created 23 million job, who raised incomes for every group in america, not just those at the top. so you know, i know that senator sanders is also attacked president obama. he's called him weak, called him disappointing. he tried to get somebody to run against him in the 2012 election, in the primary. and you know, i just don't know where all this comes from. because maybe it's that senator sanders wasn't really a democrat until he decided to run for president. he doesn't even know what the last two democratic presidents did. [ applause ] and, you know -- well, it's true. it's true. you know it's true. i mean, it happens to be true and i've got to tell you, i look at our last two democratic presidents, were they perfect? no. no person is. but i'll tell you what, i would take the two of them over any republican any time, anywhere.
2:41 am
>> there is one of the two democratic candidates here who actually ran against barack obama. it wasn't me. all right. overall, i think the president has done an outstanding job. >> very quickly, this happened earlier today on your plane during a quick press gaggle. you were pretty tough on bill clinton's record, you hit his record on wall street, he was for welfare reform, the welfare reform act you didn't like and got nafta through. it doesn't sound like a presidency you're pleased with. >> well, again, i was asked to comment on bill clinton's very, very strong criticisms of me. chuck, put it into context. it wasn't i went around attacking bill clinton. >> understand. >> it was that bill clinton has been making nasty comments about me and i was asked about that. so i happen to think that bill clinton did a pretty good job as president.
2:42 am
>> meanwhile, clinton was also asked by an audience member about releasing the transcripts of her paid speeches to companies like goldman sachs. >> why are you hesitant to release transcripts or audio/video recordings of those meetings in order to be transparent with the american people regarding the promises and assurances that you have made to the big banks? >> well, let me say this. i'm -- i'm happy to release anything i have. when everybody does the same. because every other candidate in this race has given speeches to private groups including senator sanders. >> as for republicans, they're seizing on a new interview hillary clinton did asked to match a famous declaration from another democratic candidate and president. >> you know in '76 jimmy carter famously said i will not lie to you. >> well, i have to tell you, i have tried in every way i know how literally from my years as a young lawyer all the way through
2:43 am
my time as secretary of state to level with the american people. >> you talk about leveling with the american people. have you always told the truth? >> i have always tried to. always. always. >> some people are going to call that wiggle room that you just gave yourself. >> no -- >> always tried to. >> no. carter said i will never lie to you. >> you're asking me to say -- have i ever -- i don't believe i ever have. i don't believe i ever have, i don't believe i ever will. i'm going to the best i can to level with the american people. switching gears now, president obama and first lady obama will pay their respects to antonin scalia today. but the president won't be at scalia's funeral tomorrow, by noting that vice president biden and his wife jill biden will be going instead. on the campaign trail, senator ted cruz blasted the president for skipping the funeral even though cruz said he wouldn't be attending either. >> we have 11 more months of watching damage to this country.
2:44 am
from a lawless and faithless president who's eager to travel to cuba but unwilling to show up at the funeral of justice scalia. >> cruz said he'd be changing his schedule to attend the funeral late last night. amid all of the political posturing, the president has begun the process of finding scalia's replacement according to the white house that said he's talking with senior members of his team and plans to nominate someone quickly. still ahead on "way too early," more information on the battle with apple, behind the months of talks that fell through. and winter takes the weekend off across much of this nation. bill karins has a taste of spring next on "way too early." constipated?
